Financing new purchases

The purchase of the Van Gogh Museum was made possible by several sponsors and supporters:

In 2008 the Van Gogh Museum’s collection enriched with the Seine at Nanterre by Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958). It is a valuable addition to the collection of the Van Gogh Museum and is the third work of the artist in Dutch public collection. The painting is a fascinating example of Van Gogh’s influences on later artists, in this case the early 20th-century painting Fauves group. The Seine at Nanterre was purchased with support from the BankGiroLoterij (more than half of the purchase price), the Mondriaan Foundation, the Rembrandt Association (with the Prince Bernhard Cultural Foundation) and the VSB. In February 2006 the Van Gogh Museum bought the painting, Route de Versailles, Rocquencourt by Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) and also the special Ells series by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). The painting was purchased with support from the BankGiroLoterij (about half the purchase price), the Rembrandt Association (with the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund), the Mondrian Foundation and the VSB. The print series is acquired by Vincent van Gogh Foundation (2006) with support from the Foundation’s Memorial Fund Vincent van Gogh.

In June 2006 acquired the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1955 letters from Vincent van Gogh to the Dutch artist Anthon van Rappard (1858-1892). This purchase was done with financial support from the Mondriaan Foundation, the Ministry of Education, the VSB and the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund. In 2005 the museum acquired the painting Still Life with Portrait of Mimi from 1889-90 by the Dutch artist Meyer de Haan (1852-1895). This purchase was made possible by the BankGiroLoterij. In 2003, View from a balcony in 1880 from the master Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) purchased. The painting was acquired with financial support from the BankGiroLoterij, the Rembrandt Association (with the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund), the VSB Foundation, the Mondriaan Foundation and the Vincent van Gogh Foundation.

In 2002 the museum bought the seascape The jetty of Boulogne-sur-Mer by Edouard Manet, with financial support from the BankGiroLoterij, the Rembrandt Association (with the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund), the VSB Fund, the Mondriaan Foundation, the Vincent Gogh Foundation and the Ministry of Education. These faithful donors for art purchases in the Netherlands joined the Rabobank. With a generous donation gave the Rabobank launched a five-year partnership with the museum. In 2001 the museum bought two paintings by Claude Monet, Mills in the Westzijderveld at Zaandam in 1871 and View of the Prints Hendrikkade and Kromme Waal in Amsterdam in 1874 with financial support from the BankGiro Lottery, the Foundation for National Art Collections Fund, the Association Rembrandt, thanks to the Prince Bernhard Cultural Foundation and a grant of VNU, the Ministry of Education, the Mondriaan Foundation, the VSB Fund and the Vincent van Gogh Foundation. The donation from the Foundation for National Art Collections Fund was made possible by contributions from Philips Electronics, Shell, Unilever, ABN AMRO, ING, Fortis and Heineken.
In 1999 the museum bought the painting Portrait of Guus Preitinger Kees van Dongen with the financial support of the BankGiroLoterij.
