New York Interior Designer License Tests Are Given Twice Annually

Breaking into the New York Interior Designer field is the beginning of a long road with a great reward at the end. When you first lean of the seven years of education and experience required just for the privilege of talking the exam, many people balk and look for another field of endeavor. But for those who truly have the ability and talent, the requirement is just like any other right of passage into a good paying field of doing just what you like to do.

The actual examination process is as much a ritual as passing the state bar exam can be. To become a certified New York Interior Designer, you are required to pass all three sections of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Examination. The three sections are administered twice each year in April and October and the entire examination consists of three sections. Section one covers the principles and practices of design.

New York State Building Codes and the handicapped and disabled Barrier Free Codes are now included in the study requirements for this section. Section two contains the contract development and administration portions of the exam and section three deals with mainly schematic drawing and interpretation (blueprints) and design development from concept to creation. Since October 2000, credit is given for successfully passing any of the three sections, so that you won’t have to pass a section a second time when you retest.
