What’s Happening Where We Work?

The National Survey of Business Ethics (BNP) provides an overview of the work ethic and the 2005 version indicates that ethical misconduct is increasing. And that after Enron, et al. The BNP has included more than 3,000 workers and their investigation revealed that more than half of American workers have at least one type of ethical misconduct in the workplace have been. However, reports from employees as seen by 10%. This fear, I think more companies should be aware of what is now the work ethic.

The BNP’s behavior is defined as “any conduct that the law or the ethical standards of organization have been violated.” And were the two most common types of misconduct observed by employees of abuse or intimidation of employees and extends to employees, customers, suppliers or the public, the 2005 survey indicated that the types of misconduct most frequently observed mentioned by employees.:

  • 21% observed abusive or intimidating behavior toward employees
  • 19% observed lying to employees, customers, suppliers or the public.
  • 18% saw a situation that places employee interests over the interests of the organization.
  • 16% observed violations of safety standards.
  • 12% reported discrimination based on race, color, sex, age or similar categories.
  • 11%, observed the robbery or theft.
  • 9% observed sexual harassment.

It is interesting to see these results, knowing that it adopted the regulations and other measures from Enron and other scandals. Look for a renewed or strengthened in business ethics, there is no solid evidence for a direct positive impact on ethical behavior at work. The organizations have received other “awakening” of ethics and the need to judge what they do and observe the ethical culture in their organizations. The key is to know what the official program of work for them.

Recommends a formal ethics and compliance program, federal guidelines for sentencing organizations have been proposed, consisting of six (6) points. These elements are:

1. written standards of conduct

2. Ethics Training

3. Mechanisms of advice or information ethics

4. Means to report misconduct anonymously

5. Discipline employees who violate ethical standards

6. Evaluate the performance of employees on ethics

Owners and managers must recognize the problem and the risk factors and develop and implement a strong program of ethics within the organization. A strong ethical environment should be top priority, the owners and managers should lead by example and a strong ethical culture in the company. Good business ethics should be, what in your workplace.
